Neopets: The Energy of Kids and Their Imagination

Friday, October 7th, 2011

If you haven’t heard of Neopets than I have to seriously ponder what planet you appear from, you definitely don’t hail from Neopia. http://www.neopets.com is one of the most well-known websites on the entire Internet, and what does this imply to you and me? It’s a kid’s web site. Our following generation is discovering a home in digital fact, and they love it. Neopets has more than 70 million users from Timbuktu to Kalamazoo, and has had a total of more than 300 billion web site page views. According to Wired magazine’s Dec. 2005 edition, Neopets is the second most ‘sticky’ internet site on the complete of our planet’s Earth Wide Net. Typical users are on the internet site close to 6 several hours a month…with so numerous people the mind boggles as to how a lot time our long term generations are investing time with their digital pets. What is a digital family pet anyway? Why does each kid on the Earth want 1? What do you do with them as soon as they’re in your custody?

Issues have altered considering that I was a youngster and that wasn’t too long ago enable me convey to you. I played video video games, rode BMX bicycles, and even ‘toilet papered’ the occasional property or two-usually the girls we liked (this last activity wasn’t as socially productive as the former). Virtual reality hadn’t hit the principal stage like it has nowadays; personal computers themselves in my head have been for discovering out stuff at school. No 1 knew what the Web was when I was ten decades aged back in 1985. Now all the kids are playing video games and participating in other routines on the web in order to obtain far more factors which enhance their puppy’s expertise and talents. Sounds weird, doesn’t it? It’s not weird to the tiny people of the long term.

]]>

Neopia is a strange planet, and I’ve only just begun to scratch the surface. As far as I can convey to, you can generate a digital shop to sell products, or go to other’s shops and make purchases using your factors (acquired via all the puppy’s experiences). For instance, I went to a marketplace, clicked my mouse on the music area and was told that I could invest in a ‘Chomby and the Fungus Balls’ T-shirt for only 1,588 neopoints, and that there have been at present 7 of the item in stock. I guess it’s great to acquire your dog neat issues…I don’t know if I understand it but I believe it’s a huge phenomenon…there’s even a stock marketplace known as the Neodaq index! Speak about getting the children prepared for the long term. 1 has to speculate how all this will have an effect on society when our youngsters finally do grow up. That’s one more point of contention. Where there’s action, there’s normally an adult wanting to make a buck out of it, and this internet site is absolutely no exception.

Neopets have coined its dollars-creating design as ‘immersive marketing’. The content material of the encounter is no longer separate from commercialism. You’ve noticed of merchandise placement, properly this is yet another complete step forward, or backward from that older design. I went inside the game part of the internet site (after picking a species of puppy: A Jubjub, then naming it, choosing its color, and rolling to get its characteristics.) and then had a search at the 160 probable video games for me to appreciate. I made a decision to play the McDonalds Solution Image Online game. There’s practically nothing technique about what the fit-and-tie guys are seeking to pull off here. All my preferred Satisfied Meal characters have been being portrayed in pictures that slowly obtained much more and much more focus. If you could inform that the Hamburglar was dancing, you scored details. In the Wired posting author David Kushner quotes James McNeal a professor in advertising who said, “It is not till all-around 8 a long time aged that they (kids) can mentally defend towards a persuasive sales message if they wish to.’

The balance of the Universe is usually in perform and this is one more circumstance where both positive and bad possibilities stem from a new creation in human culture. Youngsters really like Neopets. My Jubjub named Dogstarmaster appears fairly great. I don’t know how I am heading to get defensive armor for him, nor why I need it, but I guess that’s all part of the Neopet journey. Allow your kids take pleasure in, discover and make close friends with the other animals. Just be cautious, they might end up becoming stock brokers…and view out they don’t eat too numerous cheeseburgers. There’s no use getting a electronic dog that is super healthful and powerful, whilst the kid proprietor is sick and obese.

Fun by Day, Fright By Night Begins at Wild Adventures Theme Park

Valdosta, GA (PRWEB) September 23, 2011

Wild Adventures Theme Park is the area’s number one place to experience Halloween, with the family-friendly Kid-O-Ween and the bone-chilling Phobia. During the day, Kid-O-Ween entertains families and children with interactive fall-themed activities. Phobia descends upon the park at dusk, bringing new encounters for the most haunted swamp experience yet. Both Halloween events are included with park admission, a 2011 Season Pass or a 2012 Season Pass, available beginning September 30 at the park.

Phobia Conjures New Elements and Storyline

Phobia combines the most petrifying creatures and situations into an already creepy surrounding…the blackwater swamp. This year, guests will wander down a swamp trail, nearly half of a mile long, scurrying past terrors like rabid ghost dogs, lurking creatures, and swamp surprises, in order to escape the Fearmaker’s grip. Twenty haunted encounters, new design elements and a backstory make the experience unlike any other in the area.

“We really wanted to boost the scare factor by creating a backstory of how the swamp came to be and incorporating elements we have never used before,” said WA Entertainment Director John Ancona. “As you wander through, we ask you to use all of your senses and pay attention to everything around. Elements like mechanical props, projections, and motion sensors will heighten the guest’s fear level, making the experience the creepiest Phobia yet.”

The tale of the Fearmaker continues from last year’s event, stretching even farther back, 80 years, to shed light on the Legend of the Blackwater Swamp. This year’s event, while being the most frightening Phobia to date, asks guests to become a part of the experience. Guests are encouraged to look up, out, and all around as they wander through the swamp, to piece together the story. Before visiting Phobia, guests can go to wildadventures.com/phobia to gather clues and prepare for what they will experience.

Haunts also find their way into live entertainment during the nighttime Halloween event. Abra Cadaver, featuring world famous magical entertainer Aaron Radatz, showcases the deadlier side of magic, September 30 – October 29. Guests will be amazed and frightened by the eerie illusions of this magical master.

Phobia runs Friday and Saturday evenings, September 30 to October 29, from dusk until 11:00 p.m. Phobia will begin after the conclusion of the 7:00 p.m. Dolly Parton concert, Friday, October 14. Some guests, including children under 12, may find some of the experiences or images disturbing and should not visit Phobia. Guests in costume will not be permitted to enter the park during Phobia and select rides will operate.

Kid-O-Ween Brings the Sillier Side of Halloween and a New Show

The park gives even the smallest goblins something to celebrate during its daytime Halloween event, Kid-O-Ween. New for this year, Abracadabra, is a magic show featuring the world famous magical entertainer Aaron Radatz. This magical experience is geared for the park’s younger guests and features elements of Halloween hocus focus.

The family friendly event provides Halloween themed activities, in addition to the park’s animals, thrill rides and entertainment. Children can select a magical pumpkin from the pumpkin forest, doodle on a coloring mural, wander through the giant hay bale maze, and even show off their best moves at the Count Rockula Dance Party.

Kid-O-Ween runs Saturdays and Sundays in October, 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. This event is appropriate for guests of all ages.

2012 Season Passes On Sale September 30 at Park

Everyone who purchases a season pass in October gets a gold upgrade free. At $ 69.99 plus tax, a Gold Season Pass saves an average family of four $ 80 off of peak season pricing. A Gold Season Pass includes free parking, miniature golf and go-karts. Passholders also receive three additional months free as they are invited to use their passes for the remainder of 2011 including admission to popular park events like Kid-o-ween, Phobia and WA’s holiday park hours.

Guests can purchase 2012 Season Passes at the park beginning Friday, September 30 and online (wildadventures.com) or by phone (229-219-7080) Saturday, October 1. Passes must be purchased by October 31, 2011 to receive special gold benefits.

Wild Adventures is a 170-acre theme park, water park, and animal park all in one place for less located in Valdosta, Georgia. The park features one of the largest ride collections in the South, more than 500 wild animals, Splash Island Water Park, the region’s largest water park, shows, festivals and all-star concerts. The park is owned and operated by Herschend Family Entertainment (HFE), a company specializing in family entertainment. For more than half a century, HFE has owned, operated or partnered in 26 properties across ten states, including Branson, Missouri’s Silver Dollar City; operating partner with Dolly Parton in Tennessee’s Dollywood and Dollywood’s Splash Country; operating partner in Atlanta’s Stone Mountain Park and owners of Ride the Ducks amphibious tours in six cities.

The new 4,700-square-foot location is located at 6985 El Camino Real, in the Vons shopping center. The store joins the La Jolla location, which opened in 2007, as the second store in the area. The store’s team of practitioners will be led by Lisa Hinckley, licensed acupuncturist, who will work alongside licensed pharmacists and other holistic practitioners, including naturopathic doctors, herbalists and estheticians.

Grand opening events

The Grand Opening will kick off with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4pm, hosted by area chamber of commerce and city council members, along with Hinckley and store manager Susan Joslin. Later that night, Pharmaca will host a VIP Event for local doctors, chamber members, Facebook/Twitter fans, council members and other local VIPs.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, Pharmaca’s doors will officially open for business. The first 100 customers to visit the store that day will receive goodie bags filled with a variety of health and beauty samples, and will be able to enjoy free cholesterol testing. Personalities from the KyXy radio station will be on site, broadcasting from the new Pharmaca between 12-2pm.

During open hours on both Saturday and Sunday, customers can enjoy free 10-minute chair massages, and mini-makeovers and facials from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The store will also be offering a host of free gift with purchase offers from great brands such as Juice Beauty and jane iredale, as well as huge discounts on Tom’s of Maine, Dr. Hauschka and Natural Factors. In addition, customers can get a Pharmaca brand Body Lotion for a penny when they enroll in the Feel Better Rewards loyalty program.

“We’re excited to join the Carlsbad community and share the benefits of Pharmaca with more residents in the North County area,” said Mark Panzer, president and CEO of Pharmaca. “Our distinctive concept provides our customers with an opportunity to manage their own health through traditional pharmacy offerings, holistic treatment options, additional health-focused products, educational resources and a talented licensed practitioner staff.”

As a neighborhood pharmacy, Pharmaca is committed to giving back to the local community. Pharmaca has partnered with the Mitchell Thorp Foundation (MTF) to support their charitable efforts in providing funding for families with children suffering from life-threatening illnesses. As a result, 5 percent of sales on Saturday, Oct. 22 will go toward the Carlsbad-based foundation to help MTF cover medical costs for needy families, including medical equipment, co-payments, meals, transportation and lodging. “We’re so pleased that Pharmaca can partner with this organization that is so important to so many families in need,” said Panzer.

On November 3, the Carlsbad Pharmaca will host the first of its educational events with a lecture by Dr. Michael Murray, a renowned expert in integrative health. The lecture is

the first in Carlsbad’s Healthy Living Lecture Series, and will be followed by a talk on November 10 by Karen Behnke, CEO and Founding Partner of Juice Beauty skincare. The store will soon have a monthly slate of events that will help Pharmaca serve as a community health resource in the Carlsbad area.

The first Pharmaca opened its doors in 2000 in Boulder. Inspired by the pharmacies of Europe, where pharmacists play a larger role in their customers’ health and often guide them in exploring alternatives to conventional medicine, the founders of Pharmaca conceptualized an integrative pharmacy that set a higher standard for pharmacies in terms of service, selection and sustainability. They saw Pharmaca as a place where customers could get the best of conventional medicine while also exploring alternative therapies, and they wanted to focus on prevention of illness instead of just treating symptoms, ultimately empowering customers to take charge of their own health.

Pharmaca’s customers develop relationships with the licensed pharmacists and holistic practitioners they find in the store as they learn about the variety of health care options available to them. While shopping, customers can also pick from a wide selection of natural beauty products, organic body care items, eco-friendly cleaning products and fair trade gifts.

About Pharmaca

Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy Inc., founded in June 2000 and based in Boulder, Colo., is the nation’s first integrative pharmacy chain offering traditional prescription filling services alongside natural and complementary health solutions. The company now operates 24 pharmacies in California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington.

Intelligent Transportation System

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Background

Interest in ITS comes from the problems caused by traffic congestion and a synergy of new information technology for simulation, real-time control, and communications networks. Traffic congestion has been increasing worldwide as a result of increased motorization, urbanization, population growth, and changes in population density. Congestion reduces efficiency of transportation infrastructure and increases travel time, air pollution, and fuel consumption.

The United States, for example, saw large increases in both motorization and urbanization starting in the 1920s that led to migration of the population from the sparsely populated rural areas and the densely packed urban areas into suburbs. The industrial economy replaced the agricultural economy, leading the population to move from rural locations into urban centers. At the same time, motorization was causing cities to expand because motorized transportation could not support the population density that the existing mass transit systems could. Suburbs provided a reasonable compromise between population density and access to a wide variety of employment, goods, and services that were available in the more densely populated urban centers. Further, suburban infrastructure could be built quickly, supporting a rapid transition from a rural/agricultural economy to an industrial/urban economy.[citation needed]

Recent governmental activity in the area of ITS specifically in the United States is further motivated by the perceived need for homeland security. Many of the proposed ITS systems also involve surveillance of the roadways, which is a priority of homeland security. Funding of many systems comes either directly through homeland security organizations or with their approval. Further, ITS can play a role in the rapid mass evacuation of people in urban centers after large casualty events such as a result of a natural disaster or threat. Much of the infrastructure and planning involved with ITS parallels the need for homeland security systems.

In the developing world, the migration of people from rural to urbanized habitats has progressed differently. Many areas of the developing world have urbanized without significant motorization and the formation of suburbs. In areas like Santiago, Chile, a high population density is supported by a multimodal system of walking, bicycle transportation, motorcycles, buses, and trains. A small portion of the population can afford automobiles, but the automobiles greatly increase the congestion in these multimodal transportation systems. They also produce a considerable amount of air pollution, pose a significant safety risk, and exacerbate feelings of inequities in the society.

Other parts of the developing world, such as China, remain largely rural but are rapidly urbanizing and industrializing. In these areas a motorized infrastructure is being developed alongside motorization of the population. Great disparity of wealth means that only a fraction of the population can motorize, and therefore the highly dense multimodal transportation system for the poor is cross-cut by the highly motorized transportation system for the rich. The urban infrastructure is being rapidly developed, providing an opportunity to build new systems that incorporate ITS at early stages.

Intelligent transportation technologies

Intelligent transportation systems vary in technologies applied, from basic management systems such as car navigation; traffic signal control systems; container management systems; variable message signs; automatic number plate recognition or speed cameras to monitor applications, such as security CCTV systems; and to more advanced applications that integrate live data and feedback from a number of other sources, such as parking guidance and information systems; weather information; bridge deicing systems; and the like. Additionally, predictive techniques are being developed in order to allow advanced modeling and comparison with historical baseline data. Some of the constituent technologies typically implemented in ITS are described in the following sections.

Wireless communications

Various forms of wireless communications technologies have been proposed for intelligent transportation systems.

Radio modem communication on UHF and VHF frequencies are widely used for short and long range communication within ITS.

Short-range communications (less than 500 yards) can be accomplished using IEEE 802.11 protocols, specifically WAVE or the Dedicated Short Range Communications standard being promoted by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America and the United States Department of Transportation. Theoretically, the range of these protocols can be extended using Mobile ad-hoc networks or Mesh networking.

Longer range communications have been proposed using infrastructure networks such as WiMAX (IEEE 802.16), Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), or 3G. Long-range communications using these methods are well established, but, unlike the short-range protocols, these methods require extensive and very expensive infrastructure deployment. There is lack of consensus as to what business model should support this infrastructure.

Computational technologies

Recent advances in vehicle electronics have led to a move toward fewer, more capable computer processors on a vehicle. A typical vehicle in the early 2000s would have between 20 and 100 individual networked microcontroller/Programmable logic controller modules with non-real-time operating systems. The current trend is toward fewer, more costly microprocessor modules with hardware memory management and Real-Time Operating Systems. The new embedded system platforms allow for more sophisticated software applications to be implemented, including model-based process control, artificial intelligence, and ubiquitous computing. Perhaps the most important of these for Intelligent Transportation Systems is artificial intelligence.[citation needed]

Floating car data/floating cellular data

Main article: Floating car data

Virtually every car contains one or more mobile phones. These mobile phones routinely transmit their location information to the network even when no voice connection is established. This allows them to be used as anonymous traffic probes. As the car moves, so does the signal of the mobile phone. By measuring and analyzing network data, using triangulation, pattern matching or cell-sector statistics in an anonymous format the data is converted into accurate traffic flow information. With more congestion, there are more cars, more phones, and thus, more probes. In metropolitan areas, the distance between antennas is shorter and, thus, accuracy increases. No infrastructure needs to be built along the road; only the mobile phone network is leveraged. In some metropolitan areas, RFID signals from ETC transponders are used. Floating car data technology provides great advantages over existing methods of traffic measurement:

]]>

much less expensive than sensors or cameras

more coverage: all locations and streets

faster to set up (no work zones) and less maintenance

works in all weather conditions, including heavy rain

Sensing technologies

Technological advances in telecommunications and information technology coupled with state-of-the-art microchip, RFID, and inexpensive intelligent beacon sensing technologies have enhanced the technical capabilities that will facilitate motorist safety benefits for Intelligent transportation systems globally. Sensing systems for ITS are vehicle and infrastructure based networked systems, e.g., Intelligent vehicle technologies. Infrastructure sensors are indestructible (such as in-road reflectors) devices that are installed or embedded on the road, or surrounding the road (buildings, posts, and signs for example) as required and may be manually disseminated during preventive road construction maintenance or by sensor injection machinery for rapid deployment of the embedded radio frequency powered (or RFID) in-ground road sensors. Vehicle-sensing systems include deployment of infrastructure-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure electronic beacons for identification communications and may also employ the benefits of CCTV automatic number plate recognition technology at desired intervals in order to increase sustained monitoring of suspect vehicles operating in critical zones.

Inductive loop detection

Inductive loops can be placed in a roadbed to detect vehicles as they pass over the loop by measuring the vehicle’s magnetic field. The simplest detectors simply count the number of vehicles during a unit of time (typically 60 seconds in the United States) that pass over the loop, while more sophisticated sensors estimate the speed, length, and weight of vehicles and the distance between them. Loops can be placed in a single lane or across multiple lanes, and they work with very slow or stopped vehicles as well as vehicles moving at high-speed.

Video vehicle detection

Traffic flow measurement and automatic incident detection using video cameras is another form of vehicle detection. Since video detection systems such as those used in automatic number plate recognition do not involve installing any components directly into the road surface or roadbed, this type of system is known as a “non-intrusive” method of traffic detection. Video from black-and-white or color cameras is fed into processors that analyze the changing characteristics of the video image as vehicles pass. The cameras are typically mounted on poles

Alton Towers Theme Park

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

I love theme parks. I love them all but Alton Towers Theme Park has got to be up there with the best on offer.

If, like me, you love thrill rides Alton Towers has a total of 9 to make you scream with pleasure! From ‘Rita’, (the ride that sends you from 0-100kph in 2.5 seconds), to the never aging ‘Nemesis’ there is enough here to keep wondering whether spare underwear may have been a good idea!

One of the most talked about rides is ‘Oblivion’. This ride takes you to a height of 55 meters (180ft) to a vertical drop, reaching nearly 112kph (70mph) through and underground tunnel before reaching a sudden stop some 76 seconds later. Don’t be fooled by the short ride time, as it’s only half the time it will take you to catch your breath.

New for 2010 is the much anticipated ‘Th13teen’ ride. This ride is conventional in most ways except it has a world first. It drops vertically! Not in the same way ‘Oblivion does, it actually drops the whole train horizontally. Oh, and then you are sent backwards.

Under the ‘Laughs and Frights’ heading there are a total of 11 rides. The ever-popular haunted house is here but with a twist. In ‘Duel’ you have to battle the ghosts within. On a hot summers day you will love getting wet on the ‘Congo River Rapids’ then climb aboard the ‘Runaway Mine Train’. Then there is ‘Haunted Hollow’. This is not a ride but in fact a walk through with loads of surprises to scare you. When you have recovered the ‘Skyride’ will take you on a breath taking view of the parks rides, attractions and gardens.

As well as the main park there is also Alton Towers Water Park. Here you can relax under the waterfall in ‘Lagoona Bay’ or Gently float down the ‘Lazy River’. Perhaps you would prefer lying back in the Bubble Pools before testing your skill in the Wacky Water Works Tree House or splashing down one of the 3 fantastic water slides

However you would like to spend the day, Relaxing or thrill seeking, Alton Towers has got to be top of your list.

Alton Towers is accessible from either the M1 or the M6 on the A50 between Stoke and Uttoxeter. For Satellite Navigation the postcode is ST10 4DB.

Ash Strain has been a fan of Alton Towers ever since ‘The Corkscrew’ was installed in the 70s. Alton Towers theme park is near Uttoxeter in Staffordshire. A cool way to visit would be by hiring a campervan. If you would like to hire a campervan, either visit www.campervansdirect.co.uk or if you are in the UK call 0800 612 8719.

Dozens of other contemporary and vintage aircraft will participate in the daily air show at 1:00 p.m. on August 27 and 28. The Sky Knights Sport Parachute Club from East Troy will kick off the daily shows with a team of skydivers landing on the airfield. The shows will also include a tribute to Waukesha County members of the U.S. Armed Forces who have been lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

“This will be the first full air show at Waukesha County Airport in about 30 years and it promises to be a great one with all of the top quality performers we have booked for the show, and the wide variety of military and civilian aircraft that will be participating,” said Kurt Stanich, Chairman of the 2011 Wings over Waukesha event. “We’re offering a great value for families with a ton of entertainment on the ground and in the air all day long.”

Wings over Waukesha will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday August 27, with extended hours for guests to stay and enjoy a hot air balloon “glow” from 6 – 9 p.m. featuring Wind Dancer Balloon Promotions and other local professional balloon companies. Food, beverages and aviation-related merchandise are available for purchase throughout the show grounds.
